Tools

A variety of tools, trade signs, and other artifacts make up the tool collection. These objects date from early the 1800's thru the early 1900's. As with the other parts of the Collection, nearly all items were donated by individuals with Chatham connections.

In addition to the tool display, there is an excellent model of a salt works, a major local industry in the late 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. A pictorial representation of one of Chatham’s own salt works is featured. Cranberry growing was another important local enterprise and it is represented by a cranberry sorter, a cranberry scoop and other implements associated with cranberry farming. Ice harvesting was essential prior to the advent of mechanical refrigeration, and the collection includes some of the tools used for that activity, as well as a detailed series of illustrations. Carpentry, shoemaking and harness making tools are also featured.

If you have items you would like to donate to the collection, please contact the museum by phone at 508-945-2493, or by email at mwilkins@chathamhistorical.org.
