First Night Chatham: Movie Swing Time

Admission with First Night Badge

The Atwood House Museum presents the 1930’s classic, Swing Time as a part of Chatham’s First Night Celebrations. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers star as at-odds dance partners in this celebrated musical comedy. The film will start at 2:30. Refreshments will be available for purchase in the gift shop prior to the start of the film.
Shuttle service to the Atwood House Museum will be available from Rockland Trust Bank on Main Street at 2:10 pm with a 4:30 pm pickup time from the museum returning to Rockland Bank. See Event Page for details.

Picturing Chatham: 1865 - 2005
Speaker: Spencer Grey, Former Chairman, Chatham Historical Society
Location: Chatham Community Center

Spencer Grey will present a photographic overview of the life and times of people in Chatham from 1860 to the early years of the present century.  About 300 pictures will be culled from the vast collection of photographs and postcards in the archives of the Atwood House Museum.

Lecture: The Titanic
Speaker: Mark Wilkins, Former Director/Curator, Atwood House Museum

Mark Wilkins will explore the context of the sinking of the Titanic as well as what combinations of factors allowed Titanic and her two sisters to be built. Was the end use really just to cater to the super rich or was it perhaps to bring large quantities of third class passengers to America? Why? Some of the more interesting aspects of the sinking will also be covered—most notably why this marked the dawn of the modern era.

Topic: Alice Stallknecht, Mural Barn

This lecture examines the painting style and influences of Chatham muralist and painter Alice Stalknecht. The talk will also contextualize her influences and paintings within the greater framework of American history and American art history during the first half of the 20th century. The impact of her work on other artists will also be discussed.

Topic: Chatham and the Sea, Mural Barn

Samuel Eliot Morison once wrote that for most of 19th century Chatham - only old men and small boys stayed at home; all others went to sea. This talk will discuss Chatham's ineluctable relationship with the sea. Chatham's role as a fishing village as well as a bastion of blue-water sea captains will be explored and discussed. The ships they used to travel the globe will also be explained and chronicled.

Movie night

The fishing schooner We’re Here has just pulled up a different kind of fish: rich, 10-year-old Harvey Cheyne, who tumbled off the side of a sleek ocean liner. Harvey will have to wait months before the We’re Here returns to harbor, months that will transform him from a spoiled whiner into an honorable young man-all because of the life lessons he learns from Manuel, the humble fisherman who befriends him.

Join the Chatham Historical Society for a viewing of the classic maritime film "Captains Courageous." Admission is five dollars and refreshments will be available for purchase in the gift shop.

Join us to watch the Civil War movie Glory, starring Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, and Cary Elwes. A winner of three Oscars, including best supporting actor for Denzel Washington, this is the story of Robert Gould Shaw (Broderick) leading the US Civil War’s first all-black volunteer company. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Paul Mangelinkx, Principal of Chatham High School
Mural Barn

This lecture covers the causes and effects of the Chinese Exclusion Act--the only act to ever exclude a single ethnic group from America.
Mr. Mangelinkx's presentation will be drawn from his research and writing for a seminar on American immigration at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

Paul Mangelinkx has had a long interest in history, starting with his undergraduate years at Worcester State University, his experiences in Malawi in the Peace Corp, and continuing on through graduate school work and teaching. He has published articles in the Historical Journal of Massachusetts and The Register. He is now chairing the Education Committee of the Chatham Historical Society.

Shorebirding with Bob Clem, Bob Prescott , Director of Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
Mural Barn

Biologist Bob Prescott will discuss the varieties of birds that the late Bob Clem watched and painted during his long career. Prescott's lecture will include the natural history, population status and migrations of the birds which share the tidal flats, dunes and beaches of Chatham and were an inspiration for Clem's artwork.

Bob Prescott is the director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary where he has been actively involved in coastal issues and research. He received a degree in wildlife biology from the University of Massachusetts and has studied such diverse topics as whale strandings, seal distribution around Cape Cod and, most recently, the home range of box turtles. He is particularly interested in coastal ecosystems and has led trips around the world, from Belize to Antarctica, as well as in the United States.

Our Annual Hearthwarming settles nicely into the Christmas Stroll taking place throughout the center of Chatham. Join us in celebrating the holidays “Atwood House-style”. Live organ music and a fashion demonstration, a new antique toy display, hot mulled cider and treats, caroling, pictures with Mrs. Claus, and gift shop sales highlight some of the activities planned for the two days.
